Bahrain’s Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications Signs Agreement for New MRO Hangar at Bahrain International Airport

The Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications, in cooperation with Bahrain Airport Company (BAC) has successfully signed a letter of award with SETEC, one of France's largest engineering firms, for the design, supervision and consultancy services for the development of the maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) zone which includes a new MRO hangar, main stores, new aircraft parking, aprons, new taxiway, airfield pavement, engine run-up area, Airfield ground lighting (AGL) lighting, and the associated infrastructure.

The announcement came during a press conference held on the sidelines of the Bahrain International Airshow 2016, attended by His Excellency Engineer Kamal bin Ahmed Mohammed the Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications, His Excellency Bernard Renu Fabre French Ambassador, Mr. Mohamed Yousif Albinfalah, the Chief Executive Officer of Bahrain Airport Company, and Mr. Thibaut Lepingle, Director General SETEC.

Welcoming the signing, His Excellency the Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications said: ""The Airport Modernization Program (AMP) is the largest airport infrastructure project undertaken by Bahrain International Airport in over thirty years, and will be done in accordance with the highest standards in safety, security, technology and environment. We are proud to collaborate with the renowned SETEC for this project as we maintain our commitment towards operational efficiency and service excellence."

Speaking on the occasion Chief Executive Officer of BAC Mr. Mohamed Yousif AlBinfalah, said that "The signing of this BD 1,184,989 (USD $ 3,140,221) agreement is a testament to BAC's commitment to further develop the available lands within BIA with the aim of attracting new businesses and provide the capacity to serve the needs of the current and future airlines".

While addressing the gathering, Mr. AlBinfalah said that he is confident that SETEC will provide a better platform for airlines' maintenance needs. This project will achieve part of the AMP master plan as the existing MRO facilities are in need of improvement and development. The new MRO facilities and associated infrastructure will satisfy the airlines' growth demands and will provide better services. The project and resulting 3rd party developments will also bring about more improvements for BIA in terms of revenue generation will provide additional manpower development and utilization for Bahrain.

The project is expected to be completed by mid -2018, resulting in an increase in aircraft stands and proportion of flights disembarking directly into the new passenger terminal building.

The scope of the project is to provide better maintenance facilities for Airlines operating at BIA by providing improved facilities and advanced features and equipment. The project will also improve aircraft ground movement through the modification of the existing taxiway and providing an additional new taxiway link to the northern area of the runway.
